Movie Time!

As you can see, I've been a bit busy watching movies between trips up to Tufts to visit Nana and bumming around Dan's apartment. Truth be told, I didn't even make it through the last two movies. I had a feeling with The Time Traveler's Wife that the movie would ruin the book for me. Which is why I turned it off after 10 minutes or so. And I just couldn't get into The Education of Charlie Banks. What have you been watching this week?

  1. I haven't seen any of these yet, but I'm looking forward to "The Duchess" and "La Vie en Rose." There's a great podcast I recommend called Stuff You Missed in History, and they did a great episode on Duchess Georgiana. It runs 25:38, so if you're looking for something to play in the car during your next commute, you could do a lot worse than to download it.

Random trivia: In Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, "Casino Royale," Bond plays Edith Piaf's recording of the song "La Vie en Rose" on record in his hotel room.

As for the question about what I've been watching lately, I've been participating in an annual horror movie challenge for a forum I frequent (DVDTalk.com). There's a checklist of different eras, themes, actors, etc. to help give a little structure to the viewing process, and to encourage participants to explore a variety of films.

Last night, for instance, we watched the original 1968 "Night of the Living Dead" and its 1990 remake, and then went to bed and watched the colorized version of the original with a commentary track by Mike Nelson (of "Mystery Science Theater 3000"). That combination earned us a ton of check marks on our list, and it was fun to revisit the movies. I'm not big on horror as a rule, but I enjoy me some zombie movies, and I love the old Universal Horror features ("Dracula," "Frankenstein," etc.). Fun stuff.

  2. La Vie en Rose was a great movie and Marion Cotillard did an amazing performance.

I'll have to check out that forum!
